Starting POINTE WORK is a special milestone in a ballerina’s life. Dancing on your toes requires tremendous strength of the legs and feet. How do you know when you’re ready for pointe shoes?
  • The proper age to start pointe work is controversial. Many experts believe that a ballet dancer can begin dancing on pointe if she is at least 9 or 10 years old. Some teachers don’t attach a number at all, they simply rely on ability. However, because the growth of the foot is about complete at age 11 or 12, many agree that pointe work could be introduced at this time.
  • In order to be able to dance on pointe, a dancer must have had time to achieve the form, strength, and alignment needed to make a successful transition into pointe work. Proper technique is required to be able to properly rise on the toes without risks of injury.
  • In order to maintain proper technique and flexibility needed for pointe work, it is imperative to practice ballet formally at least 3 times per week. The pointe portion of the class should follow the regular ballet class, perhaps extending the time half an hour. This ensures that the entire body, especially the feet and ankles, are properly warmed up.
  • All dancers should be formally evaluated by their ballet teacher to determine if they are physically ready to meet the demands of pointe work. The teacher should check for correct body position and alignment, sufficient turnout, strength and balance, and mastery of basic ballet techniques.

Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT)

‘Progressing Ballet Technique’ (PBT) is a new addition to our timetable. This is a programme developed by Marie Walton-Mahon, an Australian ballet dancer, to help students understand which muscles they need to be engaging during their ballet repertoire. It promotes core stability, weight placement and body alignment.
We are proud to say that our teachers are certified PBT instructors and can’t wait to share their knowledge and help you achieve amazing results through this programme.
Classes are open to children and adults, please see timetable for class times.

Father's Day at Skylark Dance

Father’s Day

What a wonderful day we had celebrating Father’s Day with our Skylark Family. Thank you to the Skylark dads for dancing their hearts out. You are all simply amazing and we’ll cherish these memories forever.

To celebrate Father’s Day we’re inviting our Skylark dads and granddads to join their children in a very special dance lesson on Monday 22nd June, 18:30-19:15. If you’d like to join this class please contact us for the Zoom details.

The Driveway Project

We’re thrilled to be a part of this amazing initiative – The Driveway Project – photographing local families by their homes during lockdown.

When an amazing local photographer, Joyce Goldoni, approached us with the idea of documenting this unique time, we said YES without hesitation. This project aims to lift spirits in our community, share a slice of joy from our lives and bring us closer together… at a time when we’ve never felt further apart.

And what an incredible experience! Not only have we helped to create some beautiful images, but we’ve also helped to raise awareness and money for the wonderful Charity – SOLACE. Thank you Joyce, for letting us be a part of your art.

There is still time to make a donation for a great cause! Please see the link to the page in our profile.
